My preferred pronoun explained 

They. You may think that this word always has to be plural, but it doesn’t. They makes a perfectly good singular gender-neutral pronoun, and in fact, you’re already using it.

Using “they” as a singular gender-neutral pronoun not only makes a lot of sense linguistically, but it also respects gender nonbinary individuals who don’t want to go by “he” or “she”.
