There is a double standard, this bar owner’s claim notwithstanding, in how straight and same-sex displays of affection are tolerated whether you’re in the UK or in the U.S. When confronted about their homophobia the inevitable excuse is that they would have done the same thing if it was a straight couple. Here’s just such a story from JOE MORGAN writing for Gay Star News…
Plymouth couple were celebrating one of their birthdays
A gay couple who kissed in a UK pub were told to ‘get out’ for being ‘revolting’.
Darren Barnett, 22, and his boyfriend Dylan Morris, 20, say they were told to leave the St Levan Inn, in Devonport, Plymouth if they carried on kissing.
It was Morris’ birthday, and they were celebrating the occasion with family and friends.
‘We were there for a few hours and everyone was having a great time when Dylan and I shared a kiss at the bar,’ Barnett said.
‘This man just shouted “If you two want to continue doing that kind of stuff get out my bar”.
‘The whole pub went quiet and we asked him what he meant and he said he doesn’t like that kind of behavior. He said it was revolting.
‘We were really taken aback by the kind of language he was using. I said it was discriminatory and against the law, but he shouted to the barman to not serve us.’
Shortly afterwards, Barnett tweeted: ‘Been kicked out of a pub for kissing my boyfriend. Goodbye license.’
The hurt 22-year-old, who described the experience as ‘awful’, reported the incident to Plymouth City Council for breach of license.
Paul Bodenham, the 66-year-old landlord, denies he was being homophobic. He claimed the couple were French kissing, the Plymouth Herald reports.
He claimed: ‘I have never seen behavior like theirs on Friday night, I would have said exactly the same to a man and a woman.’
